PRESERVING AND MAINTAINING HEALTHY HAIR IN THE WINTER

The cold winter weather can really take a toll on our bodies. But often overlooked are the temperature change’s affects on one’s hair. A different hair care regimen should be in place for this season to help those of us experiencing the signs of cold-weather hair damage: dryness, static, brittle hair follicles causing split ends and frizz. And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, maybe it’s time to revitalize and protect your hair. I have provided some easy, healthy tips that may assist you in keeping your hair healthy just in time for V-day and through these remaining winter weeks.

SIGNS OF WINTER’S AFFECTS ON YOUR HAIR:
  • Dryness
  • Static
  • Brittle hair
  • Split Ends
  • Itching scalp
  • Dullness of color
  • Frizz
  • Shampoo buildup

WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM WINTER’S HARSH EFFECTS, INCLUDING:

  • Shampoos and Conditioners containing essential fatty acids, Vitamin E, jojoba, shea butter, vegetable oil and other humectants.
  • Deep conditioning treatment with Jojoba oil – a natural, oil-free clarifier and hair moisturizer.
  • Hairbrushes, elastics and hair ties that do not contribute to splitting or static.
  • Ionized blow dryers and ceramic curling/straightening irons that better protect your hair when styling.
  • Use a moisturizing conditioner daily to prevent dry hair (you can apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner if you do not wash your hair each day). Do not apply to your roots as your scalp’s oil glands will keep your roots sufficiently moist.
  • When showering, try taking shorter hot-water showers and/or rinse shampoo from your hair with lukewarm/cool water which will seal in moisture and keep your hair shiny.
  • Use 1 – 2 drops of a silicone-based serum to help tame frizz and add moisture when styling hair.
  • Use a purifying shampoo once a week to get rid of product buildup.
  • When wearing winter hats, make sure they are not too tight (so your scalp can breathe) and dry-clean them if possible as long hat-wear locks in moisture, leaving hair limp and greasy.
  • If you have thin hair, avoid using strong conditioners. Instead, add a light leave-in conditioning spray or detangler after washing.
  • Apply a few drops of vegetable oil to your hands and run through your hair as a natural moisture supplement.
  • For problems with static – gently run a fabric softener sheet on your hair and it will take away the static.
  • Using a natural wooden boar bristle brush also helps reduce static.
  • Try towel-drying your hair until it is damp before beginning to blow-dry. This lessens the frying effects of the blow dryer on your hair.
  • Combine a mixture of leave-in conditioner and water in a spray bottle and apply to your hair if you have problems with “hat hair.”
  • Drinking lots of water, avoiding a diet high in fats and sugars, and good sleep also help to maintain healthy hair.
  • Deep condition your hair every 1 – 2 weeks with a jojoba oil deep conditioner to bring moisture back into your hair.
  • Supplement your diet with foods rich in potassium and flax seeds/flax seed oil as they are excellent for your health and the health of your hair.
  • Invest in ceramic curling/straightening irons that will not damage your hair with the heat in the same way metal curling irons do.
